Mock Draft: The Redskins go BPA

The Redskins last year showed a lot of promise in the early part of the year, starting 5-2 last season before a landslide of injuries hit the Skins including an injury to Alex Smith which may end his career. Last year post draft, many said they had one of the better drafts of all the teams. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see many of their player picked in the top 160 play due to injuries. They now have the 15th overall pick in this years draft. Probably too low of a pick to get a quarterback worth taking in my opinion but also too high to go after other positions. I'll be using Fanspeak's mock draft simulator like I've used in the other mocks.

Rd. 1 15th overall Montez Sweat EDGE, Mississippi State

I sort of eluded to it above but the Redskins are in a tough spot here in the draft. I've seen some fans want them to draft a quarterback to either sit behind Case Keenum this season or maybe even win the job this season, but unless they trade up and give up draft capital they wont be getting Kyler Murray or Dwayne Haskins. I'm personally not a big fan of Drew Locke or Daniel Jones who are expected to be picked around this area of the draft. Montez Sweat would be a great pick here by Washington.  A First-Team All-American and First-Team All-SEC, Sweat can get to the quarterback just as well as anybody. Putting him up on the defensive line with Da'Ron Payne and Jonathan Allen would immediately give the Redskins an elite defensive line for years to come. With Keenum at QB, The Redskins will probably have to lean on their defense in a lot of games like the Vikings did when they had Keenum. Adding Sweat adds a dimension to that defense they didn't have.

Rd. 2 #46 overall Chris Lindstrom OG, Boston College

The Redskins need help on the offensive line. and if you want to draft a good offensive lineman, you have to do it in the first couple of rounds because they go quickly. Erick Flowers has proven in his short career that he shouldn't be starting on any offensive lines in the league and as of now he's the Redskins' starting left guard. Lindstrom is an extremely athletic guard who you can plug right into that Skins offensive line and let him work. Nothing the Redskins do will matter if they don't fix this offensive line.

Rd. 3 #76 overall Parris Campbell WR, Ohio State

The Redskins as of typing this will have a starting receiving core of Paul Richardson, Josh Doctson and Trey Quinn as your slot receiver. They need a dynamic receiver that can lineup anywhere and take any football he touches to the endzone. With over 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns last year, Campbell would immediately upgrade this offense. Think a Percy Harvin but without the migraines and off the field concerns.

Rd. 3 #96 overall Will Grier QB, West Virginia

This is a very interesting pick for the Redskins, I don't believe they have the draft capital this year to go after a Kyler Murray or a Dwayne Haskins nor do I think they should pursue that. I believe it's a better idea to keep your picks this year and next year and go for a low risk type quarterback in Will Grier. He's picked up a bunch of momentum ever since his impressive pro day and has been soaring up draft boards. He's got just about everything I'd like in a franchise quarterback. He's a great locker room guy, He's extremely aggressive when it comes to attacking defenses, And can make just about all the throws and is extremely cool under pressure. Washington could give him time to learn the system and if they like what they see, eventually give him a shot. And if they don't like him, you've only given up a late 3rd instead of a boatload of picks and jeopardized your future.

Rd. 5 #153 overall Tyler Roemer OT, San Diego State

Roemer is another very athletic lineman who can reach the second level of defenses and block downfield. He's got some baggage that comes with him, being kicked off the team this past year for violating team rules but I believe being in a room with guys like Trent Williams and Brandon Scherff can help set him straight. Roemer is going to take some time to develop but in time can turn into a starting tackle on an NFL team.

Rd. 5 #173 overall Gary Johnson LB, Texas

Gary Johnson is a guy that could step in and immediately challenge Josh Harvey-Clemons (who they drafted last year at pick 230) the linebacker position next to Mason Foster. He's got a high motor but his lack of movement speed should keep him on the inside part of the field. He's a guy that may be substituted out on 3rd downs in favor of another corner or safety but he's a good, run-stopping linebacker.

Rd. 6 #206 overall Jamal Peters CB, Mississippi State

Jamal is an intriguing prospect, a guy with day 3 tape but day 1 size, arm length and athleticism. He's definitely a project but if a team can get the potential out of him he's a guy that can jam anyone at the line of scrimmage and can definitely be intimidating to quarterbacks because of his size.

Rd. 7 #227 overall Ed Alexander DL, LSU

Round 7 is a total crapshoot and your really shooting for high reward type guys. Alexander is a guy you can put into a rotation with Da'Ron Payne and he can help plug up the middle of the line. Knee injuries have been an issue but I believe he's worth a flyer in the 7th round.

Rd. 7 #253 overall LJ Scott RB Michigan State

Obviously Adrian Peterson has resigned and Darius Guice is returning from a knee injury but LJ Scott is a guy that can take over the Peterson role when he eventually retires. This was strictly a "best player available" pick from me but I believe they could do a "thunder and lightning type approach with Guice in the future.

  1. Hey Carson! Saw your comment on my article at PFN and wanted to give you that feedback! Love this mock! I think if Washington came away with a haul like this, they'd put themselves in a good spot at all levels. Sweat is one of my favorite players and he'd be a great replacement for Preston Smith (who also when to Mississippi State). Lindstrom is my top interior lineman on my personal board, and I really think Parris Campbell is a sleeper receiver who is, at worst, a 3rd WR. Every pick you made has tremendous upside if they transition well, especially the Grier selection. Oh, and I think LJ Scott is a sleeper RB with potential, so really like his fit with the offense and learning from both AP and Guice. Keep up the great work! Really liked your explanations/logic behind each pick too!

    1. I appreciate the support Felix! I'm starting to see hype for Campbell more and more so i'm not sure he'll be there at that pick come draft night. But regardless thanks again for the support!
